Eyelash Lengthening Consultation

Why might I want an eyelash lengthening consultation?

If your lashes are thinning as you get older, we may be able to help you with an eyelash lengthening consultation. Insurance is not valid for eyelash lengthening consultations.

What happens during an eyelash lengthening consultation?

We can provide an assessment, and if it's right for you, we can prescribe LATISSE®, an at-home treatment that can give you longer, darker and thicker lashes where you can expect full results in just 16 weeks.

What is the important safety information about LATISSE®?

If you use or have used prescription products for eye pressure problems, use LATISSE® under doctor care. LATISSE® may cause increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye which is likely permanent. Eyelid skin darkening may occur and may be reversible. Only apply at the base of upper lashes. DO NOT APPLY to the lower lid. Hair may grow on skin that LATISSE® frequently touches. If you have eye problems/surgery, consult your doctor about the use of LATISSE®. Common side effects are itchy and red eyes. If discontinued, lashes gradually return to previous appearance.

Indication: LATISSE® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03% is indicated to treat hypotrichosis of the eyelashes by increasing their growth, including length, thickness, and darkness.

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit MedWatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Warnings and precautions: In patients using LUMIGAN® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) or other prostaglandin analogs for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), the concomitant use of LATISSE® may interfere with the desired reduction in IOP. Patients using prostaglandin analogs including LUMIGAN® for IOP reduction should only use LATISSE® after consulting with their physician and should be monitored for changes to their intraocular pressure.

Increased iris pigmentation has occurred when bimatoprost solution was administered. Patients should be advised about the potential for increased brown iris pigmentation, which is likely to be permanent.

Bimatoprost has been reported to cause pigment changes (darkening) to periorbital pigmented tissues and eyelashes. The pigmentation is expected to increase as long as bimatoprost is administered but has been reported to be reversible upon discontinuation of bimatoprost in most patients.

There is the potential for hair growth to occur in areas where LATISSE® solution comes in repeated contact with skin surfaces. Apply LATISSE® only to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes.

LATISSE® solution should be used with caution in patients with active intraocular inflammation (e.g., uveitis) because the inflammation may be exacerbated.

Macular edema, including cystoid macular edema, has been reported during treatment with bimatoprost ophthalmic solution (LUMIGAN®) for elevated IOP. LATISSE® should be used with caution in aphakic patients, in pseudophakic patients with a torn posterior lens capsule, or in patients with known risk factors for macular edema.

Adverse reactions: The most frequently reported adverse events were eye pruritus, conjunctival hyperemia, skin hyperpigmentation, ocular irritation, dry eye symptoms, and erythema of the eyelid. These events occurred in less than 4% of patients.

Postmarketing experience: The following reactions have been identified during postmarketing use of LATISSE® in clinical practice: burning sensation (eyelid), erythema periorbital, eye swelling, eyelid irritation, eyelid edema, eyelid pruritus, iris hyperpigmentation, lacrimation increased, madarosis and trichorrhexis (temporary loss of a few eyelashes to loss of sections of eyelashes, and temporary eyelash breakage, respectively), rash (including macular, erythematous, and pruritic limited to the eyelids and periorbital region), skin discoloration (periorbital), and vision blurred.

What is the use in specific populations information?

Pregnancy category C
Teratogenic effects: In embryo/fetal developmental studies in pregnant mice and rats, abortion was observed at oral doses of bimatoprost which achieved at least 33 or 97 times, respectively, the maximum intended human exposure (based on blood AUC levels after topical ophthalmic administration to the cornea or conjunctival sac).
At doses at least 41 times the maximum intended human exposure, the gestation length was reduced in the dams, the incidence of dead fetuses, late resorptions, peri- and postnatal pup mortality was increased, and pup body weights were reduced.

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% administration in pregnant women. Because animal reproductive studies are not always predictive of human response, LATISSE® should be administered during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Nursing mothers
It is not known whether LATISSE® solution is excreted in human milk, although in animal studies, bimatoprost has been shown to be excreted in breast milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when LATISSE® is administered to a nursing woman.

Pediatric use
Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established.
Use in pediatric patients below the age of 16 years is not recommended because of potential safety concerns related to increased pigmentation following long-term chronic use.

Geriatric use
No overall clinical differences in safety or effectiveness have been observed between elderly and other adult patients.

Can I use LATISSE® with contact lenses?

LATISSE® contains benzalkonium chloride, which may be absorbed by soft contact lenses. Contact lenses should be removed prior to the application of LATISSE® and may be reinserted 15 minutes following its administration.
