Going Green with Daily Disposable Contact Lenses

Daily disposable (DD) contact lenses have become increasingly popular for their convenience, accounting for almost half of new fits in 2022. However, with environmental concerns on the rise, many contact lens wearers are beginning to question the impact of these lenses. Are daily disposables sustainable?

The Environmental Impact of Daily Disposables

Daily disposable lenses come with multiple components—lenses, blister packs, foil seals, and outer packaging—that all contribute to waste. Research shows that the waste from daily disposables is significant compared to other items like reusable lenses and even common plastic disposables. So, what can be done to lessen this impact?

Recycling Contact Lens Waste with TerraCycle

At our practice, we’re committed to reducing waste and making contact lens use more sustainable. That’s why we’ve partnered with TerraCycle, a specialty recycling company. Through this program, we collect used contact lenses, blister packs, and foil seals, and TerraCycle recycles these materials into new products, helping to minimize their environmental impact.

For our patients, this means there’s an easy way to recycle their lens waste. We offer bins in our office where you can drop off your used lenses and packaging. Once collected, the waste is sent to TerraCycle, where it’s recycled into post-consumer products instead of ending up in landfills or waterways.

Tips for Responsible Disposal

If you’re a contact lens wearer, here’s how you can help the environment:

1. Bring your used lenses and packaging to our office for TerraCycle recycling.

2. Avoid throwing lenses in the sink or toilet. Improper disposal can lead to microplastics in our water systems, which can harm aquatic life and potentially enter the food chain.

3. Explore eco-friendly options. Ask us about sustainable practices or brands that prioritize environmentally friendly materials and packaging.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference

While waste from contact lenses may seem unavoidable, with proper recycling and responsible disposal, we can all make a difference. By using TerraCycle and other eco-friendly initiatives, we’re working toward a healthier planet, one lens at a time.
